Why does a company like DACHSER need a clear strategy – and how does this look in practice?

For me, strategy is like a North Star: it gives all employees orientation and a framework for decision-making. Particularly important are the questions “Where to play?” and “How to win?”. It’s about deliberately creating competitive advantages and identifying the right markets and paths to success. A good strategy helps set priorities, use resources sensibly, and stay on course even in difficult times. It ensures that everyone in the company pulls together and does not lose sight of the long-term goals.

Especially in economically challenging times, we invest consciously to be prepared for the future.

What role do acquisitions (M&A) play in DACHSER’s growth – and how do you decide when and where to invest?

Acquisitions enable us to access new markets more quickly, to strengthen our network, and to acquire capabilities that would take too long to build internally. Most of our recent acquisitions – such as Müller, Frigoscandia, Brummer, or ACA – served geographic expansion and the strengthening of our network. The right time for an acquisition arises when a target company fits the strategy – regardless of economic cycles. Especially in economically challenging times, we invest consciously to be prepared for the future. Studies show that acquisitions in such phases are often more successful because there is less competition and prices are more attractive. It is important that as a company, we have the capacity to “digest” several acquisitions at the same time and learn from them – this makes us particularly strong as a so-called “serial acquirer.”

DACHSER relies on a combination of organic growth and targeted acquisitions.

How does DACHSER manage to find the right balance between organic growth and acquisitions – and what do acquisitions generally mean for the consolidation of the logistics industry?

DACHSER relies on a combination of organic growth and targeted acquisitions. Which strategy makes sense in each case depends on which approach creates value faster and more sustainably. In dynamically growing markets, organic growth is often easier to achieve, while in mature markets, acquisitions become more important. They strengthen one’s own position and drive consolidation. Consolidation is a natural process in all maturing industries – including logistics. The crucial question is: Do you become part of the consolidation, or do you actively shape it? DACHSER clearly pursues the goal of actively shaping the industry.

Identifying paths to success requires a sound strategy.
