Can we still afford to invest in climate protection and sustainability today? A journalist recently asked me this question, which was certainly meant to be somewhat provocative. I turned the question around and asked, “What will it cost us if we don’t invest in climate protection and sustainability?”

The data—especially from insurance companies—speaks for itself. It is part of our corporate responsibility to address global warming and its consequences. And we must take active steps to reduce our emissions step by step. We are staying the course for future generations, even if other issues are currently dominating the public agenda.

For us, responsibility means that we examine ourselves and the legal framework in detail with regard to sustainable technologies. We pursue a fact-based and technology-neutral approach based on process and energy efficiency, as well as research and innovation. Our strategy focuses on effective decarbonization measures that can be implemented under realistic financial and technological conditions. We reject symbolic target promises without a reliable implementation perspective. It is both a confirmation and an incentive for us that our approach has recently been honored with the renowned Eco Performance Award from German and Swiss logistics associations.

Transformation needs a business model

Ultimately, however, responsibility also means that sustainable logistics services must be profitable – for both the customer and the service provider. Without an appropriate business model, no transformation can succeed. This requires clear political guidelines that secure investments in sustainability, coupled with a streamlined bureaucracy that provides structure but does not place an excessive burden on small and medium-sized enterprises such as our service partners.

The road to decarbonization ahead of us is still very long. We will continue to travel it responsibly and together with our customers and partners.
